Jae Seok Kim takes us on a tour of Jongno, from the small, charming streets of Gyedong to the industrial Euljiro, south of the Cheonggye stream.

Major stops include the House of Ko Huidong, once home to the pioneering figure in early 20th-century Korean art, Doosan Gallery, which fortified South Korea’s artist support system, and Seendosi, a bar and music venue that has been the stepping stone for many independent artists in the last decade.

Jae Seok also maps out queer lives past and present in Seoul, visiting the queer-friendly shop Water and Air, the architectural remnants of the historic Pagoda movie theatre – once a gathering place for Seoul’s gay community – and Bar Friends, which welcomes all ‘regardless of sexual orientation, gender identification, religion, age, race, ethnicity, nationality, disability, and/or HIV status.’

Take part in Euljiro Night on 1 September 2025, for special events and late openings across the area, including a visit to the artist Haegue Yang’s studio.
